Cryptic Pregnancy Scams In Nigeria

In my old blog (iykbethany Gistville), I talked about cryptic pregnancy scams in Nigeria. To say that article has saved a lot of people from scams and heartbreaks is an understatement. Since I wrote that article I have received lots of calls and emails from numerous victims, most of whom want to remain anonymous.

What Is a Cryptic Pregnancy?

A cryptic pregnancy, also known as a stealth pregnancy, happens when a woman becomes pregnant but doesn’t know she is pregnant. She might not know that she is pregnant until about halfway through the pregnancy or even up until labor or birth.

She may have slight symptoms of pregnancy that are easily overlooked or no symptoms at all—including no baby bump. In some women, they may not realize they are pregnant because of a mental health or medical condition that either masks pregnancy symptoms or leaves them in denial about the pregnancy.

Causes of Cryptic Pregnancy

A woman being pregnant and not knowing seems like an impossibility, but it happens, though rare. The primary cause of a stealthy pregnancy is hormones. 

Hormonal imbalance can lead to slight bleeding that resembles a period. If you’re not missing your period (or f irregular to begin with) and feel mostly the same as usual, why would you take a pregnancy test?

  • Lack of pregnancy symptoms: Such as baby bump, nausea, back pain, and vomiting does not always show up in every person. Some women can experience pregnancy symptoms to different degrees and at different times.
  • Mental health conditions:  Certain psychological conditions is a less common cause of cryptic pregnancy. It is often called a “denial of pregnancy,” it occurs when someone mentally believes they aren’t pregnant, despite tests showing that they are.
  • Research suggests that people with certain mental health conditions may be in denial or not understand that they are pregnant.

These factors are how many women can go months without knowing they’re pregnant.

 

However, the above definitions do not in any way tally with the current cryptic pregnancy scams and ectopic pregnancy frauds that is ravaging Southern parts of Nigeria, especially South-South and South East.
These fraudsters use different names and tricks to deceive people. In some places, they call it cryptic pregnancy while in some other places if is called ectopic pregnancy.
It is an organized criminal gang with different gang members playing different roles. They have a group of young girls they pay to have babies and another group of young boys that get these young girls pregnant. They also have criminal gangs that go to hospitals, markets, churches etc to steal babies. This is the easiest method they are running baby factory business in Southern Nigeria.

How Do They Run Cryptic Pregnancy Scam?

The story/fraud starts with someone telling you about some women that can get any woman pregnant in a cryptic way. They tell this story to desperate women who have been married for years and couldn’t bear children. The aim is to scam you and sell other people’s babies to you while making it look like you gave birth to this baby.
If you are gullible enough to believe their stupid story, after payment they will insert many unthinkable things into your private part. In some places, they will give you injections and herbs and many other kinds of stuff that will make your stomach bloated and look like you are pregnant for real.

They will warn you never to visit hospitals as the pregnancy will never be revealed in scan machines. Once they give you the injection, all your organs, breast, and abdomen will bloat like you are truly pregnant. You will be bloated and look like you are pregnant, whether you have sex with your husband or not. This is African wonder, init?
 
From my research, I found out that they inject these gullible women with oestrogen and sometimes progesterone hormones that cause the abdomen to bloat/enlarge, formation of cysts, and appearance of being pregnant.
While you are “pregnant” these people will arrange a fresh baby for you. Remember I said it’s a criminal gang, it’s a huge racket. They have a group of poor, desperate young girls who they pay some money to get pregnant, they also have boys that impregnate these girls. If there is no baby in their baby factory they steal babies from hospitals, churches, homes, and many other places.

They warn these women never to go to the hospital for antenatal or for pregnancy tests because the baby won’t show in scan. They claim no medical equipment will be able to detect the baby but somehow it is only these fraudsters that have spiritual eyes and techniques to detect your imaginary Cryptic baby in your abdomen. Pure nonsense.

 

By the 9th month, once they arrange a baby for you, they will admit you into their office/facility, they inject you with anesthetics so you won’t see the arrival of the magical baby, but you will wake up and find a baby by your side. Hallelujah, somebody.

 

If you conduct a DNA test you will discover that this baby is neither yours nor your husband’s.

As explained above, their victims are usually married women who have been married for years but cannot make babies. Because of their desperation to have children, they are easily deceived.

Cost Of Cryptic Pregnancy

The charge is usually between 1.5 Million naira to 3 Million naira, depending on the sex of the baby. Male children cost more. The initial deposit is usually between 70,000 naira to 400,000 naira.

 

Why Is Ths Scam So Successful?

  • Culture: In the western world having a husband or child is not a do-or-die affair but in Africa especially in Nigeria, people will look down on you if you have no husband or children. But in many cases infertility is the husband’s fault, such as low sperm count etc but in Africa most people still blame the wife?
  • Desperation: Desperation can make you lose your senses of reasoning. There are so many cryptic pregnancy groups on Facebook where some delusional or shall I say mentality unstable women talk about weird kinds of stuff such as being pregnant for 3 years without any medical proof. This is not a joke, check some Facebook groups some of these women claim they are pregnant for 3 years and counting. Each time I tell them it’s not possible they invade my dm to raise insults and abuses.
